Georgian silver cowrie shell snuff box

Ref: DIG200975009/3
Sold
Top example of Georgian silver cowrie shell snuff box. Carries full coat of arms for 1st Earl Annesley, County Down, Ireland. Makers mark Benjamin Stokes Dublin 1789. Title of Earl Annesley was created 17th August 1789 for Francis Annesley 2nd Viscount Glerawly. Could well have been made to mark the creation of the Earldom. Engraving is in fantastic order, very crisp, gilding to inside of lid is in excellent order. Little play on hinge means it does not fully close, but a truly wonderful historical item.
